- Description
- Description. The United States Marine Corps (USMC) Marine Corps Systems Command (MCSC) is interested in obtaining information on solutions for alternate power sources for use with Marine Corps Tactical Remote Sensor Systems (TRSS) family of unattended devices. Using hand and air-emplaced sensors, TRSS support the field commander's intelligence collection effort by providing continuous, wide area surveillance of the battlefield. Functional elements of TRSS include sensor systems, retransmission systems, and monitoring systems. Evolutionary system upgrades ensure that fielded systems provide a state-of-the-art TRSS capability for the Marine Corps. Intended Application of Alternate Power Sources. TRSS are required to operate unattended for a minimum of 30 days in outdoor environments within the temperature range of 25 to +52 degrees C. Despite using various power management schemes and low-power electronics, the sensor's integral battery energy is frequently a limiting factor in system performance. While most TRSS devices allow the attachment of external power sources, the additional size/weight penalty of these external sources usually has a negative impact on the systems ability to be man-packed to remote locations. Current Power Sources. Power sources currently used in TRSS include "C-cell" alkaline batteries, BA-5590/U military lithium batteries, and special purpose lithium batteries (for air-delivered sensors). Alternate power sources are being sought for both hand-emplaced and air-delivered devices. Alternatives. Viable alternative power sources must be low-cost, require little-to-no additional training, and have a higher power density. If a non-replenishing solution is proposed, replenishment supplies must be low-cost and readily available. Finally, the proposed solution must not cause any harmful effects to personnel, equipment, or the natural environment. Responses. The Government desires a COTS solution, if possible. Industry firms capable of accomplishing the required services, in whole, or by teamed effort, are invited to submit an affirmative response to this notice. Partial solutions should not be submitted. Firms should include literature, brochures, specification sheets, prior experience in this type of effort, and capability summaries directly addressing their ability to meet the aforementioned needs. Responses shall be limited to 10 pages for the technical information. Potential sources are requested to send a letter of interest, previous business experience with similar efforts, business size and a corporate point of contact to the Marine Corps Systems Command by 04 June 2001.
