Description
The Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy, Inc. ("AURA") is seeking a vendor to proofread approximately 750 pages of proceedings from an astronomical conference. This work will need to be completed within 2 weeks of when the text is available, which is expected to be May 25, 2001. Samples of the text can be found at http://www.cfht.hawaii.edu/~manset/AATS/ProofReading.html. The selected vendor will be responsible for the following: (1) Correcting punctuation use (e.g., capitalization, commas) use of italics, quotation marks, boldface, consistent font usage; (2) Ensuring consistent layout style among all papers (e.g., consistent style of titles, figure captions); (3) Correcting basic grammar (run-on sentences, sentence fragments, and blatant tense shifting) and checking for proper paragraphs. (4) Items 1 through 3 must be done using major style manual (GPO Style Manual or Chicago Press); (5) Checking for a one-to-one correspondence between references cited in the text and those in the reference list; (6) Checking for correct Astrophysical Journal style in the reference list (See http://www.journals.uchicago.edu/ApJ/instruct/instruct.text.html#sc1.11) (7) Mark up will be done on hard copy using standard proofing notation. Experience editing scientific papers would be a plus. Proofreaders are not expected to change text in a file, but rather to mark up and return hard copy. This is due to our use of the latex mark-up language, a standard in astronomy, but rarely used elsewhere. A proofreader experienced with latex operating under linux or unix could offer their text editing services as a value added item. The Gemini Observatory is an international collaboration to operate two 8 meter telescopes, one located on Mauna Kea in Hawaii, the other located on Cerro Pachon in Chile. The Gemini partners include the USA, United Kingdom, Canada, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, and Australia. The Gemini Observatory is operated by AURA under contract to the National Science Foundation. Interested parties should submit a quotation by no later than Thursday May 10, 2001. The quotation should describe experience, list some references, give a per-page rate, and commit to being able to complete the work within 2 weeks of receving the hard copy. Quotations should be addressed to "Contracts Manager, Procurement No. N210605" and submitted by fax to 520-318-8590. Please call Andrew Flach at 520-318-8537 with any questions.
