Description

Mammoth Cave National Park has two improperly abandoned oil/gas wells located within a karst landscape north of the Green River. Both well #6, approximately 1100 feet deep, and well #9, about 1500 feet deep, bore through the Mammoth Cave karst aquifer. This "cave-bearing zone", as described in driller's logs, may contain both older, air-filled cave passages, and newer, active, water-filled passages. In three of the previously plugged wells, significant quantities of oil, brine, hydrogen sulfide, methane, and ethane were found. Drilled in 1927, oil was encountered in well #6 at a depth of 1101 to 1112 feet, and gas/oil at 1140 to 1160 feet. Surface casing is present. Property records and landowner conversations indicate that well #9 was drilled in the late 1920's to a depth of 1500 feet. At that depth a show of oil, gas, and brine was found. Both wells will be plugged using Best Management Practices designed for oil well abandonment in karst areas. The well bore will be first cleared of any obstructions and logged to detect any abnormalities. The bores will be filled with Portland class A or class C cement from their total depth to within 100 feet below the cavernous zone. A bridge will be placed at the top of the cavernous zone and the well bore filled to the ground surface with Portland cement.
