Description
The objective of the Aircrew Laser Eye Protection (ALEP) program = is to develop, manufacture, field and sustain a system that will = provide Air Force aircrew members protection against laser = devices/systems in combat, military operations other than war, and = training situations while minimizing visual performance degradation. = Aircrews will employ the ALEP whenever laser devices (e.g., = rangefinders and designators) are likely to be employed by US, Allied, = or unfriendly forces. ALEP will protect against invisible wavelength = weapons. Multiple ALEP devices for the visible spectrum may be required = because of the regional and evolving nature of the threat. When the = technology allows, the protection offered by the ALEP will be changed = during production upon notification by HQ ACC/XO of an emerging threat. = Given the inherent visual incompatibilities of visible wavelengh = protection, aircrews will use ALEP only in the laser threat area. ALEP = is an Acquisition Category (ACAT) III program. ALEP must also be = compatible with aircrew life support equipment. The Program Definition = and Risk Reduction (PDRR) contracts were awarded to two contractors in = September 2000, which included a 12-month schedule with prototype = deliveries in August 2001. The Air Force's acquisition strategy is to = enter into a Full & Open Competition for the System Development and = Demonstration (SDD)/Production phase(s). The "draft" Request for Proposal (RFP) and the "final" RFP for the SDD = Production effort will be released in its entirety via the Internet. No = hard copies will be provided. Tentative dates for posting the draft RFP = and final RFP are 18 Jul 01 and 18 Sep 01, respectively. Each = interested contractor is encourage to register through the website as a = result of this source sought synopsis. Any technical questions to the = ALEP may be referred to gary.trammel@brooks.af.mil.
