- Description
- The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, National = Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, has a requirement for = experimental characterization of airflows in aircraft cabins. Previous = and ongoing studies have documented levels of various contaminants = present on passenger aircraft in flight. In addition to chemical = pollutants, concern has been raised over biological agents that may be = present, specifically an interest in the potential for transmission of = infectious diseases during commercial flights. Limited research has = been done in the area of disease transmission in aircraft, and longer = and more frequent flights carrying passengers worldwide have increased = the possibility that such transmissions will occur. A three part = research approach will be followed that involves experimentation, = analytical modeling, and biological sampling to understand the = dispersal of and removal of aerosols in the aircraft environment. = Experimental data collected as a part of this contract will be used to = characterize the airflows in aircraft cabins by evaluating the impact = of the presence of humans in the low velocity aircraft environment. = The thermal plume is believed to have a significant impact on air = motion in the cabin environment as well as the transport of = contaminants to the respiratory system, and it is critical that such = data include the thermal plume created by the human body. Data will = also be used to validate a Computational Fluid Dynamics model being = created as part of another contract effort. Request for Proposal No. = 2001-N-08008 will be issued on an unrestricted basis to full and open = competition. The solicitation will be issued on or about June 13, = 2001, and proposals will be due on or about July 13, 2001. = Organizations interested in receiving a copy of the solicitation may = submit a written request to: DHHS/PHS/Centers for Disease Control and = Prevention, Contracts Management Branch, P.O. Box 18070, Cochrans Mill = Road, Building 140, Pittsburgh, PA 15236-0070. Written requests = submitted by facsimile to telephone number (412) 386-6429 will be = accepted. No telephone requests will be accepted. Please cite the = solicitation number in your request. Offerors may obtain a copy of the = RFP via the internet at www.eps.gov. All responsible, responsive = sources may submit an offer which shall be considered by the agency.
