Description

The US Army Robert Morris Acquisition Center, has a requirement for Microbial Biodegradation of Polymeric Plastic Substitutes in the Marine Environment. The Government anticipates awarding a single Firm Fixed Price contract to Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, Woods, Hole, MA. This research and experiments can only be done at Woods Hole as they have the necessary equipment, laboratory and ocean samples required for the speciliazed research. Woods Hole performed past research and data and the present contract is an ongoing effort, which will build off of these results. Any data from another sources would not provide Natick with valuable information to execute their programs. The effect of conventional plastics as a major environmental pollutant is recognized. This is an attempt to minimize the effect of disposal of these materials in the environment; significant research is being conducted to produce biodegradable polymers that can serve as plastic substitutes. The goal of the proposed research is to be able to assess, through a tiered testing approach that both accurately and practically address the issue of biodegradability, the ecologically safe disposal of polymeric plastic substitutes in the marine environment. Delivery of reports will be monthly and Inspection and Acceptance shall be at Destination by the cognizant receiving authority.
