Description

Snag-Log Inventory in Relation to Roads -- Sample snags and logs in 40 coniferous stands on the Flathead National Forest in western Montana, and in 40 coniferous forest stands on National Forests in the Upper Grande Ronde Basin of NE Oregon, in relation to varying distances from National Forest roads. Conduct correlation analyses of the results of field sampling with snag and log data available from Forest Service FIA plots in western Montana and northeast Oregon. Sampling must use methods of Bate et al.1999 (Estimating snag and large tree densities and distributions on a landscape for wildlife management USDA For. Serv. Pacific Northwest Research Station PNW-GTR-425. Portland, OR) and methods of Bate et al. 2001 (Performance of sampling methods to assess log resources, Forest Science). No training or other help with acquiring the needed expertise to use these methods will be available, and thus the contractor must be proficient in the use of methods by Bate et al. (1999, 2001). A draft scientific report summarizing the results of the inventory, as well as the correalation analyses, is to be delivered by December 31, 2001 to the Forest Service. A final report will be delivered to the Forest Service by December 31, 2002. Reports will be in a format suitable for submission to a peer-reviewed journal in the fields of forestry or wildlife.
