- Description
- Researchers at the National Institute of Standards and Technology = (NIST) are working on the following technologies:This invention opens = the field of direct phase-coherent microwave to optical frequency = comparison using a single optical frequency comb, and is a simple = technique for precision frequency synthesis over the entire optical = spectrum. The need for even a single divider stage for use in = connecting optical and microwave frequencies has been obviated with the = introduction of special air-silica microstructure optical fibers. The = air-silica microstructure optical fiber broadens the frequency comb of = a femtosecond laser to span the optical octave from 1064nm to 532nm, = enabling the measurement of the 282 THz frequency of an = iodine-stabilized Nd:YAG laser in terms of the microwave frequency that = controls the comb spacing. The invention constitutes an enormous = simplification in the connection of the microwave and optical domains = through the use of a broadband optical frequency comb generated with = femtosecond laser technology and the novel optical fiber.
