- Description
- Abandoned Mine Land (AML) sites create serious safety and environmental problems in our National Parks at New River Gorge National River (NERI) and Gauley River National Recreation Area (GARI). Approximately 115 sites are within NERI and 5 are in GARI. Two large coal preparation plants are also present in NERI. Although sites at the two parks have been inventoried previously, a current re-inventory is needed to more accurately locate the sites, identify existing problems and, given recent changes, reassess relcamation priorities. Setting priorities is essential, as limited funding requires the national Park Serevice focus reclamation efforts on those areas posing the greatest significant risks.
