- Description
- Embedded Simulation Research and Development. The US Army Simulation, Training and Instrumentation Command (STRICOM), 12350 Research Parkway, Orlando, FL 32826-3276 will initiate research in FY02 on embedded simulation and training for objective force combat vehicles covered by the BAA N61339-01-R-0023 issued in March 2001. Technologies of interest support an Advanced Technology Demonstration (ATD) of objective force embedded training for future combat systems. The basic technology will provide small ground units (up to four vehicles) with capability to use their organic vehicles for gunnery and tactical training in a fully virtual environment against a realistic virtual opposing force (OPFOR). It will also support training in a live environment, with virtual friendly and opposing forces realistically overlaid in live scenes as seen from combat vehicle sights and sensors. These same technologies may be used to provide enhancements to After Action Review (AAR) and operational functions such as mission planning, mission rehearsal and battlefield/situational awareness. STRICOM's Inter-Vehicle Embedded Simulation Technology Science and Technology Objective (INVEST STO) has proven in laboratories the viability of embedded simulation as an enabler for embedded training. The STO has also shown the utility of embedded simulation for enhancing operational functions such as mission planning and rehearsal. The ATD will move these technologies from laboratory development onto objective force vehicles and weapons systems. By combining technologies such as semi-automated forces, 3D-visualization, and computer miniaturization on live vehicles, the ATD will mix live, virtual, and constructive environments such that individuals, crews, and units can train, plan and rehearse combat missions using organic equipment. Specific areas of interest include: embedded simulation and training for combat vehicles; management and use of high-resolution PC-based synthetic environments (horizontal resolutions of less than one foot); dynamic update of terrain databases using remote sensor input; display and control of multiple PC-based simulation windows (up to 6) in a single display; intelligent tutoring for teams and crews; low cost single-board VME computers providing state-of-the-art dual processors, memory, graphics, communications ports and media storage; PC-based image generation software supporting multiple channels from a single-board computer; enhanced inter-vehicle simulation communications with reduced demand for bandwidth; synchronization of multiple independent semi-automated forces; integration of virtual entities into live scenes; registration of virtual terrain databases with live terrain; concepts for using embedded simulation with the Future Combat System, and integration and demonstration of embedded simulation and training technologies on live combat vehicles. Wherever possible Commercial-Off-The-Shelf (COTS) products will be proposed to maximize cost savings. Awards resulting out of this announcement may take the form of a contract or a cooperative agreement. White papers should address specific areas of interest referenced above or the major research thrust as described in the BAA. White papers should include a technical approach, research goals, military relevancy and estimated costs. White papers must be received NLT July 2, 2001. POC is Hubert Bahr, John_Hart@stricom.army.mil, 407-384-3887.*****
