Description

This is a pilot study of swimming pools in the metro Atlanta area. The purpose of this pilot study is to collect information on the microbiological and chemical quality of water in community swimming pools, routine operation and maintenance practices, operators' familiarity with published CDC health safety guidelines, and public health-related policies, including policies and response to fecal accidents. There is limited data in the literature characterizing swimming pool water quality, common disinfection practices (chemicals, doses, contact times), how community pools are commonly operated and maintained and how pool management plan to respond to fecal accidents. Most of the information on swimming pool chemicals is proprietary and held by the manufacturers. The Emory researchers have extensive experience in water microbiology, water chemistry, disinfection, and waterborne diseases. They have investigated the literature on swimming pool-associated outbreaks of disease, and recommendations for swimming pool operation and maintenance (including disinfection). Therefore, CDC intends to award a sole-source purchase order using simplified acquisition procedures to the Rollins School of Public Health (RSPH) of Emory University media. However, all responsible sources that feel capable of providing this study may submit a quote that will be considered by the CDC. An electronic copy of the RFQ will be available for downloading from www.eps.gov when issued. The tentative issue date is August 6, 2001.
