Description

The U.S. Army Research Office (ARO), together with the Advanced Research and Development Activity (ARDA) and the National Security Agency (NSA), announces the availability of Broad Agency Announcement (BAA) No. DAAD19-01-R-0008 for Experimental and Theoretical Development of Quantum Computers dated July 2001. The BAA solicits research proposals for one to three-year performance periods for both experimental studies of potential physical embodiments of quantum logic and for more basic (usually, but not necessarily, theoretical) studies in the related fields of quantum error correction and control, quantum computational complexity and algorithms, and quantum decoherence and entanglement. The experimental implementation studies must develop proof-of-concept demonstrations. A minimum objective is the demonstration, at the conclusion of a three-year project, of several entangling operations on at least three qubits. Proposals for theoretical and other basic studies should be smaller in scope, but like the larger experimental qubit implementation proposals, should make very clear how the proposed work will enhance understanding of quantum computation and, therefore, facilitate the eventual development of practical quantum computers. The BAA solicitation contains additional information along with instructions for white paper and proposal preparation and submission. Informal white papers will be considered during the period July 30, 2001 to September 14, 2001. White papers are not required prior to proposal submission but are heartily encouraged. Proposals must be received at ARO by October 10, 2001. Electronic submission of white papers (if submitted) and proposals is required.
