- Description
- COLLABORATIVE RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES IN NANOSCALE SCIENCE Oak Ridge National Laboratory is planning a highly collaborative and multidisciplinary Center for Nanophase Materials Sciences to address the national need for facilities to support state-of-the-art research on the synthesis, fabrication, characterization, and understanding of nanoscale structures, materials, and phenomena. The Center will include a Nanofabrication Research Laboratory, a Nanomaterials Theory Institute, and extensive facilities for materials synthesis and characterization. Additionally, the location of the Center at ORNL will facilitate use of the intense neutron beams at the upgraded High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR) and the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS), for fundamental studies of the structure and dynamics of nanomaterials. The Center will be broadly accessible to the scientific community through a peer review process. To facilitate scientific community involvement in planning the Center, a Workshop on Nanophase Materials Sciences will be held October 24-26, 2001 at the Garden Plaza Hotel in Oak Ridge, TN. Input is sought on candidate research focus areas, equipment needs, and user operations. The workshop will begin with a plenary session surveying nanophase materials research in universities and industry. The Center concept of creating a synergistic research environment to advance knowledge-and ultimately applications-of nanoscale materials and phenomena then will be described, together with the Center's principal components. Breakout working sessions will follow to further develop the Center's scientific program and organization. Recommendations from these breakout sessions will be incorporated in Center planning, and are expected especially to influence the formation of collaborative research focus areas. Registration and reservations for the Workshop should be completed by October 1. The complete Workshop program, registration information, and detailed information about lodging and local travel connections are available at http://www.ms.ornl.gov/nanoworkshop/nanointro.htm. If you would like to be included in future electronic mailings, please contact Sandy Lowe, Workshop Secretary, by e-mail at lowes1@ornl.gov.
