Description

This is a special notice issued by Westinghouse Savannah River Company (WSRC), management and operating contractor for the U.S. Department of Energy's Savannah River Site near Aiken, South Carolina. WSRC wishes to determine public interest in licensing for commercial applications the phytoimmobilization process, a new method to passively remove and stabilize subsurface contaminants in situ. The two-step process combines phytoextraction with contaminant stabilization in a specially amended topsoil layer. Passive remediation continues over numerous plant growth cycles without the expense of removing and disposing of harvested aboveground biomass at the end of each growth cycle. Using multiple sequestering agents and various phytoextracting plants allows the simultaneous removal of multiple contaminants. This approach reduces the volume of waste for ultimate disposal and is more ecologically friendly to sensitive ecosystems.
