Description

Air Force Research Laboratory, Materials and Manufacturing Directorate (AFRL/MLBC ) solicits research proposals for the effort "M&P for the Development of Structural/Multifunctional Carbon-Foam Applications". The principal objective of this program is to identify and develop a structural/multifunctional application for carbon and/or graphitic foam and define the material/process/property relationships necessary to fulfill the requirements of the chosen application. Identifying a transition path for the developed technology is also considered an important objective of the program. The unique mechanical/thermal/electrical properties of carbon materials make carbon foam an attractive lightweight material for aircraft, space launch vehicles, and satellites requiring multifunctional material performance. The properties of carbon/graphitic foams, however, strongly depend on the foam ligament (strut) geometry and its microstructure. These are greatly affected by the processing method. A variety of commercial methods exist for manufacturing carbon/graphitic foams displaying a wide variety of properties. Proper choice of the foam manufacturing/processing method should lead to an optimum design for the given application.
