- Description
- The Pacific Northwest National Laboratory is conducting a survey to identify resellers and other potential licensees to distribute and market the Palmfon software developed for the Department of Energy. This application suite provides easy access to corporate databases for users of handheld PDA devices such as Palm Pilots and Windows Pocket PC devices. Its DATA COMPRESSION technology makes it very feasible to download large databases to PDA handheld devices for users to retrieve and search the extracted data. Palmfon operates on the following platforms: Palm OS devices; Wireless PDA's; Microsoft Pocket PC / WinCE computers; and the Web itself. Comprised of both client and server modules, Palmfon is written using Java Servlets, JDBC and Java 2 Micro Edition. Palmfon enables authorized users to extract and download records of SQL-compliant databases to handheld PDA devices. It has a Web interface for an administrator to select the content and format of the data (staff directory, product, customer, inventory data, etc.) to be downloaded to an employee's PDA device. An SQL query is run on the database resulting in a table(s) of data; this data is compressed and converted by Palmfon into a form suitable for quick loading onto PDA devices. Users can then load the data to their PDA for immediate use and searches on the extracted data. User access is through a simple Web-based lookup or standalone applications for handheld devices such as Palm Pilots and Windows Pocket PC devices. Note, a wireless connection is not required. Unlike other applications, Palmfon supports MULTIPLE sets (tables) of data records such as employee addresses to be stored and accessed on the PDA device. Some of the applications for Palmfon include detailed corporate staff directories, product descriptions, marketing information, product inventory status for salespeople, customer data, HAZMAT references, regulatory information, law enforcement, and any other information that can be retrieved from a relational database. Overall, users who own a hand-held PDA device can now have complete access to important data even when not wired to the organization's central database environment. For more detail and an online demo of the Palmfon application suite, please visit the Web site referenced below. Additional information may be obtained via the email link below. Interested and qualified firms should respond in writing, emailed or postmarked or faxed no later than October 31, 2001.
