Description
The New England District intends to award a contract for a laboratory scale investigation at the Picillo Farm Superfund site located approximately 15 miles south of Providence, Rhode Island. Unsaturated and saturated subsurface media at the site are heavi ly contaminated with chlorinated and nonchlorinated cycloalkanes, alkanes, phenolic, and aromatic hydrocarbons as a result of drum and bulk liquid disposal in 1977. Observation and analysis of soil samples at this site strongly suggest the presence of res idual nonaqueous phase liquid (NAPL) retained under capillary pressure in glacial till and glacialfluvial deposits (positive sudan IV results, contaminant concentrations in excess of 1000 mf/kf range. FID readings greater than 10000 ppmv, and visual obser vation of viscous oily material in soil). The primary objective of this laboratory-scale investigation is to conduct a series of batch and column studies to support future field-scale gas-phase partitioning tracer testing at the Picillo Farm superfund sit e in Coventry, Rhode Island. Specific objectives consist of: (1) selecting gas-phase nonpartitioning and partitioning tracers; (2) assessing variation in NAPL-gas partition coefficients with changing NAPL composition due to weathering or volatiliation, an d (3) demonstrating proof of concept of NAPL saturation estimation in column studies. Work shall be completed by October 2002. Solicitation shall be available on or about 22 October 2001. Prospective bidders and subcontractors are required to self-regis ter their firm or office on the Internet to receive this solcitation. Registration instructions are avalable on the Internet at http://www.nae.usace.army.mil/index.html. No telephonic, mailed or fax requests will be accepted. Those registering are respo nsible for the accuracy of the information on the mailing list. All responsible sources may submit a proposal which will be considered by the New England District
