Description

This is a solicitation for organizations able to supply a magnet suitable for use in an experimental magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) power generation test chamber. There is continuing interest in novel designs using MHD to provide power generation in niche applications. The magnet sought will probably be a water-cooled resistive type, but other types will be considered if they are cost competitive. The supplier must provide a suitable power supply with the magnet. The magnet must develop a 1(one) Tesla field with a 10 (ten) inch diameter pole face across an approximately 5 1/2 (five-and-a-half) inch gap. Field variations across the pole face must be less than 5%. Cooling water is available at the facility, the supplier need not supply a cooling skid. The power supply must use standard US voltages and must meet applicable codes and standards. The magnet will be run at a single setting (1 Tesla) for several minutes at a time, and will be used several times a day. Residual field without power should permit normal work to proceed nearby without an excess of special precautions. Prospective vendors should respond by October 26, 2001. Responses to this announcement should include descriptions of proposed magnets including physical size, magnetic characteristics, electrical characteristics, physical interfaces to the facility, approximate cost, and approximate lead time from receipt of order.
