- Description
- The Radiation Epidemiology Branch, Division of Cancer Epidemiology & Genetics, National Cancer Institute has a contract requirement entitled, ?Research Support for the Project: Effects of the Chornobyl Accident on Thyroid Cancer and Leukemia and Related Diseases.? This contract supports the Branch?s international collaborative program on the evaluation of the radiation-induced effects resulting from the accident at the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant on thyroid diseases, leukemia, and other hematologic diseases. The contract will provide technical support activities including 1) technical support to NCI staff in all disciplines associated with the implementation of three protocols (e.g., radiation epidemiology, radiation thyroidology, hematology, cytopathology, ultrasonography, clinical laboratory operations, data systems management, and statistics) and 2) technical expertise in the collection, processing and analysis of biomedical data. Administrative and managerial support shall include 1) providing support for project-related training; 2) developing and producing study-related documents; 3) facilitating the purchase and delivery of equipment and supplies to the collaborating institutions; 4) maintaining an inventory of equipment purchased by NCI for the project; and 5) providing clerical support. In addition to these tasks, the following skills and knowledge are required for this contract: 1) the ability to operate in an international arena; 2) access to fluency in the Ukrainian and Russian languages with familiarity of relevant scientific, medical, and technical terminology; 3) sensitivity to cultural and economic circumstances in Belarus and Ukraine; 4) insight into their fluid political realities; and 5) ability to recognize, analyze and respond to changing situations effectively and diplomatically in concert the NCI. This work is currently being performed by Columbia University in New York under contract number NO2-CP-77032. It is anticipated that a three-year research contract will be awarded with two option years. A cost-reimbursement, level of effort type contract is planned. The level of effort for this contract is 5.15 full-time equivalents per year, for a total of 25.75 over the five-year period. This contract will be awarded under full and open competition. The NAICS code is 541710. The Request for Proposal will be issued electronically at http://rcb.nci.nih.gov under ?Current Requests for Proposals? and will be available approximately December 14, 2001. Notwithstanding the 1/23/2002 proposal due dated cited elsewhere in this announcement, proposals will be due approximately 45 days after release of the Request for Proposal.
