- Description
- ECOLOGICAL RESEARCH IN THE LARGE-SCALE BIOSPHERE-ATMOSPHERE EXPERIMENT IN AMAZTNIA (LBA-ECO): PHASE II, AND OPPORTUNITIES IN TERRESTRIAL ECOLOGY NASA RESEARCH ANNOUNCEMENT (NRA) NRA-01-OES-06 RELEASE DATE: December 7, 2001 The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) is announcing opportunities to participate in Earth Science Enterprise (ESE) research and development activities to: 1) continue, extend, or enhance ecological research being conducted as part of the Brazilian Ministry of Science and Technology-led Large Scale Biosphere-Atmosphere Experiment in Amaztnia (LBA) and 2) to conduct remote sensing-oriented terrestrial ecology research. For LBA, proposals are sought to address the effects of tropical forest conversion, re-growth, and selective logging on carbon storage, nutrient dynamics, trace gas fluxes, and the prospect for sustainable land use in Amaztnia. Research should address the following four science themes, with a special emphasis on use and/or interpretation of remotely sensed observations to understand the effects of land conversion in Amaztnia: land cover and land use change, carbon dynamics, trace gas and aerosol fluxes, and nutrient dynamics and surface water chemistry. For terrestrial ecology, proposals are sought to conduct remote-sensing oriented carbon cycle modeling and research focused on analysis of new satellite data and data product continuity to understand ecosystem variability and responses to global environmental change. Participation in the NRA is open to all categories of domestic and foreign organizations, including educational institutions, industry, non-profit institutions, NASA research centers, and other government agencies and laboratories. This solicitation will be available electronically on the release date via the Internet at the Research Opportunities Online Home Page at: http://research.hq.nasa.gov/ under "Office of Earth Science (Code Y)." Paper copies of the announcement will be available to those who do not have access to Internet by calling (202) 358-3552 and leaving a voice-mail message. The following dates apply to this announcement: Proposals Due: March 7, 2002
