Description
TECHNOLOGY/BUSINESS OPPORTUNITY Disposable Radiation Biodosimeters Opportunity: Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), operated by the University of California under contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), is offering the opportunity to license a disposable device for detecting an individual?s exposure to radioactive materials. Background: Following a terrorist radiological attack, first responders need a portable, disposable device to effectively triage large numbers of victims based on their levels of radiation exposure. There are currently no such devices in the responders? kits. Description: This technology gives emergency personnel the capability to perform quick, inexpensive testing of affected individuals. LLNL has identified and patented protein and DNA biomarkers to detect ionizing radiation (IR) exposure in humans. These biomarkers are suitable for use in disposable test kits using lateral flow devices and commercially available antibodies. Advantages: ? Rapid diagnosis ?? perfect for emergency situations ?? reduced feedback time ?? Lower medical costs for the patient ? Utilizes easily accessible biological samples (skin cells, saliva, blood cells, serum, etc.) ?? May not require FDA approval ?? Lower clinical costs for both patient and health care provider ? Small, handheld, field-deployable, and easy-to-use ?? Lower operating costs for the care provider ? Uses lateral flow technology (similar to home pregnancy tests) ?? Simple, Cost-Effective to build ?? Lower production costs for the manufacturer ? Can easily incorporate other protein biomarkers ?? Greater flexibility and adaptability for other applications Current Applications: ? Military or civilian post-attack triage ? Border control/customs checkpoint sampling ? Hair, cheek, or blood sample analysis from individuals suspected of handling and/or transporting radiological & nuclear (R/N) materials ? Forensic sample analysis from suspected R/N weapons labs or incident zones Potential Applications: Although the disposable biodosimeter is designed to detect radiation exposure levels, the technology can be used in any situation where protein biomarkers are used, e.g., cancer testing Intellectual Property: Portfolio of 6-7 inventions depending on specific application. U.S. patent applications have been filed for both the markers and the lateral flow technology. Development Status: Vendor relationships have been established with a supplier of antibodies and with a device fabricator. To view a picture of the device go to: http://www.llnl.gov/IPandC/technology/profile/announcement/disposableradiation.php LLNL is seeking industry partners with a demonstrated ability to bring such inventions to the market. Moving critical technology beyond the Laboratory to the commercial world helps our licensees gain a competitive edge in the marketplace. All licensing activities are conducted under policies relating to the strict nondisclosure of company proprietary information. Please visit the IPAC website at http://www.llnl.gov/IPandC/workwithus/partneringprocess.php for more information on working with LLNL and the industrial partnering and technology transfer process. Note: THIS IS NOT A PROCUREMENT. Companies interested in commercializing LLNL's FluIDx technology should provide a written statement of interest, which includes the following: 1. Company Name and address. 2. The name, address, and telephone number of a point of contact. 3. A description of corporate expertise and facilities relevant to commercializing this technology. Written responses should be directed to: Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory Industrial Partnerships and Commercialization P.O. Box 808, L-795 Livermore, CA 94551-0808 Attention: FBO 149-07 Please provide your written statement within thirty (30) days from the date this announcement is published to ensure consideration of your interest in LLNL's Disposable Radiation Biodosimeter technology.
