The VA Pacific Islands Healthcare Systems Center for Aging (CFA) is needing 10 bariatric medical beds to satisfy a recent spike in demand and evolving healthcare standards, while ensuring that fall prevention, infection control, and wound care practices are optimized through the usage of beds with an ergonomic design and safety features that is appropriate for the Veteran population being served. Specifically, the CLC is looking for an all-in-one medical bed system that the suits the needs of all Veteran residents. Essential/significant physical, functional, or performance characteristics: The bed system should include a standardized bed frame, mattress, and support surfaces that promote a home-like environment to remain consistent with the CLCs push for making residents feel as if they are in their own home environment Bed should feature an easy-to-navigate Bed frame should be customizable to each patients clinical needs and preferences to avoid the need for constant switching of frames/mattresses upon each new admission Height of bed should be as low to the ground as possible (preferably 10-12 inches) to reduce the risk of falls, which has been a recurring problem within the community living center Bed frame should be capable of supporting a weight capacity of up to 1000 lbs. The support surfaces should be supportive of wound care best practices surface design and air chambers should run horizontally to ensure less disruption to the healing of open wounds Support surfaces should also support microclimate management, alternating pressure, and pressure redistribution modalities Bed surface should be dynamic in that it adjusts to where the patient is sitting/laying to allow for easier, more comfortable movement for patients without deflating the surface or causing additional pressure points The bed mattress pump should be able to generate enough air to reach up to 50 liters per minute or more to deter the spread of airborne particles throughout a room Hospital bed should have a brake lock with easy maneuvering steering Side rails should accommodate the bed to ensure patient safety and security Bed frame and support surfaces should be easily cleanable to ensure infection control policies are complied with Hospital beds should be in compliance with long-term care standards and the latest federal health and safety regulations
